Emily Barnes is one of New York’s most sought-after fashion stylists. She works with top photographers to create her signature clean, precision looks that are featured in the pages of Vogue, Vogue China, Vanity Fair, V Magazine and GQ.
A graduate of Central Saint Martins, Emily graduated with a Master’s degree in Fashion Communication. Starting out, she assisted Camilla Nickerson at American Vogue and London-based stylist Charlotte Stockdale.
Emily regularly styles editorial shoots and campaigns, along with dressing celebrities for red carpet events. She is the Contributing Fashion Editor to US Elle, and consults for brands Aritzia and Halston.

I first met Emily in London, while I was working at the department store Selfridges. She would come into the Stylist Studio to loan or buy clothes for various fashion shoots or celebrities and it was always fascinating to see the pieces she had selected.
Despite her move from London to NY, I was lucky enough to speak with her recently and ask her a few questions about her successful career in the world of fashion and celebrity.
In 2008, my agent wanted me based in NY, my client roster changed and it made being based in NY a lot easier. It was also a great time for me personally.
2. What inspires you and shapes your approach to fashion stories or dressing celebrities?
I research constantly. For fashion editorials, I’m researching my character for the story and then research clothing that sits within this story telling. For Red Carpet, I always look at the actress’s personality and her body shape. I definitely aim for them to wear the dress and not the dress wearing them!
3. What are the essential must-have pieces that every woman needs to have in her wardrobe?
A great blue and black jean, a fitted blazer, a navy cashmere sweater, white tees and a black suede heeled pump.
4. As a fashion influencer, how have you built relationships with fashion brands and celebrities?
5. Can you reveal who you are dressing for this year’s award season?
Anna Chlumsky for VEEP
6. What is your favourite fashion shoot/image or celebrity styling moment?
